Hypervelocity Spherically-Blunted Cone Flows in Mars Entry Ground Testing

چکیده
Bow-shock standoff distances over sphere and spherically-blunted cone geometries were examined through experiments in two facilities capable of high-stagnation enthalpy hypersonic flows simulating Mars planetary entry conditions. High-speed high-resolution schlieren images obtained the California Institute Technology T5 reflected shock tunnel Hypervelocity Expansion Tube to examine facility independence measurements. Accompanying reacting Navier–Stokes simulations carried out. A recently developed unified model for sphere–cone behavior was first verified with thermal chemical nonequilibrium. Shock distance measurements both found be good agreement predictions. Hypervelocity Aeroheating Measurements in Wake of Mars Mission Entry Vehicle
Detailed measurements of aerodynamic heating rates in the wake of a Mars-Pathfinder configuration model have been made. Heating data were obtained in a conventional wind tunnel, the NASA LaRC 31" Mach 10 Air Tunnel, and in a high-enthalpy impulse facility, the NASA HYPULSE expansion tube, in which air and CO2 were employed as test gases. The enthalpy levels were 0.7 MJ/kg in the Mach 10 Tunnel,...
متن کاملDevelopment and application of streakline visualization in hypervelocity flows
In the traditional smoke-wire setup, the streak lines consist of smoke generated by oil that vaporizes as it runs down a heated wire placed upstream of a model in a wind tunnel. Provided that the wind tunnel flow has sufficiently Abstract A method for visualizing streaklines in hypervelocity flows has been developed. The method uses the high temperatures produced in hypervelocity flows to ablat...
متن کاملFind Life on Mars entry
Georgia Tech expects to compete in Find Life on Mars with at least two (and potentially four) robots operating as a cooperating group. Research at Georgia Tech and elsewhere has demonstrated the speed and robustness afforded by multiple robot cooperation (Balch et al. 1995a, Balch and Arkin 1995b). The robots, Nomad 150s from Nomadics Technologies, are pictured in Figure 1. The Nomad 150 is a h...
متن کاملShock layer instability near the Newtonian limit of hypervelocity flows
The curved bow shock in hypersonic flow over a blunt body generates a shear layer with smoothly distributed vorticity. The vorticity magnitude is approximately proportional to the density ratio across the shock, which may be very large in hypervelocity flow, making the shear layer unstable. A computational study of the instability reveals that two distinct nonlinear growth mechanisms occur in s...
متن کاملRadiation Database for Earth and Mars Entry
This lecture presents the general guidelines we have followed to build up an exhaustive and accurate spectroscopic database for radiative transfer in air and CO2-N2 plasma applications, including atmospheric entries. This High Temperature Gas Radiation (HTGR) database includes bound-bound atomic, diatomic and polyatomic (in particular CO2) transitions, bound-free transitions resulting from vari...
